How is cat age calculated scientifically?
Unlike dogs, where breed weight causes dramatic divergence, all domestic cats share very similar body sizes and biological rates. Feline veterinarians agree that the first calendar year equals approximately 15 human years (reaching sexual and skeletal maturity), the second year brings them to roughly 24 human years, and each subsequent year adds 4 human years.
When is a cat considered a senior?
Cats are classified as "Mature" between 7 and 10 years (human equivalent 44–56), "Senior" between 11 and 14 years (human equivalent 60–72), and "Super Senior" from age 15 onwards (human equivalent 76+).
Do indoor cats live longer than outdoor cats?
Yes, significantly. Statistics from feline veterinary associations show indoor-only cats commonly reach 15 to 19+ years due to protection from vehicle trauma, feline leukemia virus (FeLV), toxins, and predators. Cats allowed free outdoor access have a much lower median life expectancy of 3 to 7 years.
